Two Races to Watch For – Reston and Dawg Days

By Martin • June 26th, 2009

A little PSA for everyone out there on two upcoming races you should look out for.

Reston Grand Prix: This Sunday in, well, Reston. I’m particularly excited for this one because it’s a .8-mile course with eight turns. Last year I hated crits; this year I love ‘em. The more technical the better. (And just imagine — after you’re done racing, you can go shopping at Ann Taylor or The Paper Source! OMG!) Not only is this course fan-friendly, it will also help benefit the Raisin Hope Foundation. More details on the good cause over at GamJams.

Dawg Days of Summer Circuit Race: July 12 in Bowie, MD. Sure, you say, another circuit race? Yes. And best yet, we’re co-sponsoring it with the great folks over at Artemis. They’ve taken us under their wings to show us the ropes so we can eventually put on our own race in the area (Hains Point Double-Century Crit is in the works, people). We’ve seen the 2.1-mile course, and it should make for interesting and exciting racing. It’s still a few weeks away, but as we get closer I’m going to start calling people and teams out by name if they don’t register. (Kyle Jones, I don’t see you on the start list. Or you, DJ Brew. Neither is Siggy present. It’s cool. You guys seem better suited for TTs. Or fun runs.) We’ll have good prizes, great premes and even Joe Jefferson. And we promise he won’t use that “strung out like Amy Winehouse line.” It’ll be all new, current and freshly offensive material.

Oh snap, they called me out. After having my ass kicked in a one-on-one sprint last night by DJ, it is an honor to have my name preceded by the Honorable Fast-Twitchiness.

I just hope those premes aren’t supplied by Ann Taylor and the Paper Source…

Yeah I am going to do both the 3′s and 1,2,3 since I can ride to the course in 15 minutes from my house. Yes. Like I said on Facebook, how is the course going to be run. Because the on loop is like a little more than a mile. I could believe 2.1 kilometers than 1 mile. I could be wrong.

hey if you guys want to promote a race, this is the one you should do, since The Bike Rack is in DC:

The Meridian Park Classic Criterium.

S/F is on Florida ave between 14th and 15th. Go West, Right on 15th, up the hill, Right on Euclid, Right on 14th, downhill, fast right back on Florida.

This would be a KILLER crit because of the hard climb, super fast descent and sharp right back onto the hill.

I’d love to promote it myself, but 1) I’m lazy, 2) Dave makes promoting races sound like a horrible ordeal, 3) NCVC already promotes 4 races this year.

But yeah, crits, more fun than circuit races.

Greg,

We’ve toyed with the idea. The only issue? Shutting down roads in a residential area is a nightmare of epic proportions.

But I would love to see the looks on the faces of the people having to race up 15th Street and then down 14th. That alone makes me want to pursue this.

Alternatively, a Twilight Crit in Adams Morgan with the S/F on 18th Street. We’d be assured a drunken beer-throwing crowd.

shit yeah that’d be sick. If other big cities can do it, I don’t see why DC can’t. up 18th, down Columbia.

promoting races IS a horrible ordeal. i generally get about 36 minutes of sleep these days. and the phrase “you should…” should cost the sayer $100 whenever it’s said to a promoter or would be promoter.

and for once in my life i beat a rainstorm home. good omen for tomorrow! guess the course will have a few puddles. it’s pouring.
