DVR Takes Greenbelt B Race!

By Martin • August 20th, 2009

dennisIt took an entire summer, but we did it — and by just one point. The boys of the District Velocity Racing B squad at Greenbelt yesterday delivered our own Dutch wonderboy Dennis B. to victory in the series, defeating CycleLife’s Josh Flexman by a single point. We also managed to place three other riders in the Top 10. (Yes, I realize there is one race left, but Josh F.’s early season victories moved him to the A race and Dennis has padded his lead by just enough to keep the jersey.)

We never meant to throw much into Greenbelt; it’s a training race after work on a Wednesday, after all, meaning that getting a full squad of guys out on a weekly basis would always be tough. Half-way through the summer a few of us had moved up to the A race, but a consistent group of guys started making a showing for the B race. Grayson, Matt, Corey, Dan, Tom and a few others became regulars, and as Dennis started accumulating points, the team decided to start working to control the race, get the Dutchman his points and neutralize any potential threats. (Let’s be honest, here — it might be a training race, but no one soft-pedals and guys are still looking for the win.)

Each week’s results became motivation for the next week — we constantly spoke of protecting the jersey, no matter how loosely it fit on Denny’s tiny frame. (We actually had to pin it together in the back so it wouldn’t hang off of his body and balloon up as he rode.) Yesterday a smaller group showed, but they worked to get Dennis the victory and the points to leap into first place. Nicely done, boys.

For next week, there’s a plot being hatched to steal Dennis’ bike and spray paint it green, all TdF-style. We’re also looking for a green helmet, green shoes, green gloves and green bartape. We may just have to raid Thor Hushovd’s closet.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Completely awesome.

Ok, so it’s not an “A” race event, nor is it the A race at the non-A-list event, but the Greenbelt B series has been one of the most interesting, most strategic things happening in MABRA this summer, with the same teams and same riders showing up week after week on the same course.

Congrats to Dennis, Rez, Grayson, and Marcus for this week’s win. And congrats to all DVR B riders throughout the season. A great team effort. Awesome, guys!!!!
