HISTORY
Our team has humble roots. Cobbled together from a Sunday morning ride, a race team was hastily formed in the cold winter months of 2008 and set off to take on the many challenges of competitive riding in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Training and racing everywhere from the streets of Washington, D.C. to the back roads of Amish country in Pennsylvania, members of District Velocity Racing logged 273 entries in local races throughout 2008 and placed amongst the top 10 finishers in 41 of those. The team raced in six states, rode over 93,000 combined miles, purchased 13 new bikes and generally obsessed way too much about how it looked in spandex.
The team had a banner season in 2009, with 17 wins, 47 podium spots and 113 top 10 finishes. Local stage races seemed to be our thing — we took the victory in the Cat 3 GC and took third and fifth in the Cat 4 GC at Tour of Washington County, took third and fifth in the Cat 4 GC at the Tour de Ephrata and won individual stages at Washington County, Ephrata and the Tour of Lancaster County.
District Velocity Racing remained strong in 2010, claiming wins at such classics such as the Poolesville Road Race and the Michael P. Murad Memorial Road Race. We are also proud to have the Cat 4 MABRA Road Race Champion, Corey DiPietro, on the team. Corey won the distinction with a brave performance at the Page Valley Road Race in August 2010.
Coming into the 2011 season, District Velocity Racing is excited to be working with a new shop sponsor — Bicycle Pro Shop — and is happy to welcome a slate of new members that will continue producing the results and fostering the team spirit that has made the team well-known in the Mid-Atlantic.
Community Involvement
In our first year, District Velocity Racing was the only local team to volunteer at the ING Direct Capital Criterium, a professional-level race in downtown Washington, D.C. that drew thousands of spectators and hundreds of world-class cyclists. The Bike Rack Race Team also co-sponsored Juniors’ Day Out, a day-long event in Sykesville, Maryland focused on promoting athletic competition among disabled individuals.
In 2009, we worked closely with Artemis Racing to host the Dawg Days of Summer Circuit Race, and in 2010 we jumped on as a full co-sponsor of the race. Dawg Days will be back in 2011.
